In this edition, we review several communication tools that you can use to connect and interact with your students in face-to-face and online courses.
Use the Announcement Tool for Weekly Announcements
One way to keep students engaged and on track in their learning is through frequent, timely communication. Faculty can use the Announcement tool to notify students of course events, introduce or summarize class activities, provide general feedback for all learners, or post regular class updates. Announcements can be pushed out to student email immediately or they can be scheduled in advance. If you teach multiple sections of a course that would benefit from the same announcement, consider using the Qwickly tool to send immediate announcements to multiple sections at once.
Support Learning and Community through Discussion Boards
The Discussion Board is a communication tool that allows students and the instructor to discuss, interact, and exchange ideas. The Discussion Board tool can be used by faculty to foster a sense of community and open communication in a course. Common uses of this tool include creating a “Welcome to Class Introductions” forum to get to know students and a “Question and Answers” forum to allow students to post questions and receive support from you as well as their classmates. By subscribing to a forum, you will receive an email notification whenever there is a new message posted.
Sending Emails from Blackboard
Students are advised to access their MATC Gmail accounts frequently, as this is their main source of communication with the college. Each semester course that you teach contains an Email tool that you can use to send email notifications to an entire class or specific students. Email notifications are automatically sent to student’s MATC Gmail accounts based on the course’s roster.
